Interleukin 6 (IL-6), promptly and transiently produced in response to infections and tissue injuries, contributes to host defense through the stimulation of acute phase responses, hematopoiesis, and immune reactions. Levels of circulating IL-6 are elevated in several inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis and Crohn's disease. IL‐6 has been used as an inflammatory marker as independently associated with the risk of major disease.
