Staphylococcus protein A (SPA) is a cell-wall component that was identified in S. aureus more than 40 years ago. Its capacity to bind the constant regions of antibodies renders it useful as a means for extracting immunoglobulins. The SPA-based products that are mostly used are Immunosorba and Prosorba.
