Target/Biomarker information

Colonization of the small intestine is a prerequisite for enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli to cause diarrheal disease. plasmid-containing K antigen was commonly found on calf and lamb enterotoxigenic E. coli strains and demonstrated it to be a colonization factor and an adhesive factor. This antigen has been designated K99. The removal of the K99 plasmid and thus the K99 antigen from an enterotoxigenic calf strain resulted in an organism that no longer caused diarrhea.
