This phosphorylated tau variant is predominantly localized within the central nervous system (CNS) of felines, where it fulfills a fundamental role in the maintenance of neuronal microtubules' structural integrity. Structurally, Feline p-tau413 belongs to the tau protein family, sharing genetic and functional homology with its human and other animal counterparts. Under normal circumstances, tau proteins like p-tau413 bind to microtubules and assist in their assembly. This function is vital for proper axonal transport, synaptic plasticity, and overall neuronal function. However, in the context of neurodegenerative conditions observed in cats, tau proteins like p-tau413 undergo abnormal phosphorylation. This post-translational modification results in tau proteins adopting atypical conformations, rendering them susceptible to aggregation. The aggregation of tau proteins culminates in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles within neurons, a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases analogous to Alzheimer's disease in humans.
