Its presence is pervasive in various feline tissues, with prominent expression in the liver, kidneys, lungs, and immune cells. Structurally, Feline YKL-40 is characterized by its unique chitin-binding domain, which can interact with extracellular matrix components, suggesting a role in tissue remodeling and repair. This glycoprotein's glycosylation also contributes to its stability and modulates its functions, particularly in the context of inflammation. The expression of Feline YKL-40 is tightly regulated and can be induced by various pro-inflammatory stimuli. Immune cells, such as macrophages and neutrophils, are prominent sources of YKL-40 production in response to infections and inflammatory signals.
