    Target/Biomarker information

Feline Thioredoxin Reductase (TrxR) is an enzyme that plays a pivotal role in the intricate symphony of feline cellular biochemistry. Functionally and structurally akin to its counterparts across species, TrxR is a defender against oxidative stress—a formidable adversary that, when left unchecked, can jeopardize the vitality of feline cells. TrxR's story unfolds within the confines of feline cells, where it choreographs a complex dance of redox reactions. At its core, TrxR catalyzes the reduction of thioredoxin (Trx), a modest yet influential protein that stands as a guardian of cellular redox equilibrium. In its reduced form, Trx takes on the mantle of safeguarding cells against the malevolent influence of reactive oxygen species (ROS), diffusing their potential for oxidative harm to critical cellular components. Feline physiology is no stranger to the perpetual production of ROS. These molecules, born as natural byproducts of normal cellular metabolism, pose a continuous threat to cellular well-being. Here, TrxR emerges as a stalwart protector, ensuring that the precarious equilibrium between ROS production and detoxification remains intact. This equilibrium is essential because, like all living organisms, cats encounter ROS during everyday metabolic activities and in response to external stressors. When this balance falters, oxidative damage takes its toll, impacting essential cellular components, including lipids, proteins, and DNA.
