    Target/Biomarker information

Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) in cats (felines) emerges as a keystone biomarker that transcends its enzymatic role to become a linchpin of thyroid health, metabolic regulation, and overall well-being. Housed predominantly within the thyroid gland, TPO orchestrates a symphony of biochemical reactions essential to a cat's metabolic equilibrium. The defining function of TPO revolves around its enzymatic prowess, culminating in the catalysis of iodination. Specifically, TPO catalyzes the iodination of tyrosine residues residing on thyroglobulin, a substantial glycoprotein produced within the confines of thyroid follicular cells. This intricate molecular dance represents a pivotal step in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, including thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which govern a myriad of physiological processes in cats. TPO's catalytic mastery unfolds through the incorporation of iodine atoms onto specific tyrosine residues within thyroglobulin. This chemical transformation begets iodinated tyrosines, which, in subsequent coupling reactions, give rise to the biologically active thyroid hormones T4 and T3. These hormones wield authoritative control over metabolic pathways, influencing energy utilization, thermoregulation, growth, and a spectrum of physiological systems within a cat's body.
