    Target/Biomarker information

Pregnancy-Specific Protein B (PSPB) is widely recognized in bovine pregnancy diagnostics, where it serves as a marker for early detection of pregnancy. However, in the context of feline (cat) pregnancy, the equivalent marker often referred to is not PSPB but rather different hormones and proteins that are used to confirm pregnancy. For cats, the most commonly monitored substances related to pregnancy detection include: Progesterone: Levels of progesterone, a hormone produced by the corpus luteum and later by the placenta, remain elevated throughout pregnancy. Measuring progesterone levels can help confirm pregnancy, although it's not specific to pregnancy alone since levels can also be high during the estrous cycle or with certain medical conditions. Relaxin: Relaxin is a hormone produced by the placenta that can be reliably measured to confirm pregnancy in cats. Commercial relaxin assays are available and can detect pregnancy as early as 20 to 25 days post-conception. Relaxin is a more specific marker for pregnancy than progesterone because its presence at elevated levels is almost exclusively associated with pregnancy. Unlike in cattle, where PSPB (a protein produced by the placenta) is a specific and reliable marker for pregnancy detection, in cats, relaxin serves a somewhat similar role as a pregnancy-specific indicator. The use of ultrasound and palpation by a veterinarian remains a standard and reliable method for diagnosing pregnancy in cats, with biochemical markers like relaxin offering supplementary confirmation. To date, there is no widely recognized or used equivalent of bovine PSPB for pregnancy detection in cats in veterinary practice. The focus remains on using hormones like relaxin and diagnostic imaging techniques for confirming pregnancies in feline patients.
