NGAL, stored in specific granules within these white blood cells, stands ready for deployment upon neutrophil activation. When confronted with inflammatory cues or signs of cellular stress, neutrophils release NGAL into the bloodstream. Additionally, NGAL is expressed in renal tubular cells, further expanding its significance. In response to various stressors, such as inflammation, oxidative damage, or nephrotoxic insults, renal tubular cells release NGAL into the urine.
