Target/Biomarker information
H-FABP, Heart-Fatty Acid Binding Protein, represents a remarkable biomarker within the feline (cat) physiology landscape. This small but pivotal protein finds its predominant expression within the heart muscle, or cardiomyocytes, where it plays a central role in the regulation of fatty acid metabolism. Structurally, H-FABP is a cytoplasmic protein endowed with a unique binding site that enables it to ferry fatty acids—a vital energy source—within the cardiac muscle cells. The exclusive localization of H-FABP within the feline heart underscores its critical importance in assessing cardiac health. Under normal circumstances, H-FABP levels in a cat's bloodstream remain relatively low. However, its concentration can surge significantly in response to cardiac stress or injury, rendering it a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tool for veterinarians and a source of invaluable insights for feline owners. H-FABP's functional significance within the heart is multifaceted. It actively participates in the uptake, transport, and utilization of fatty acids as an energy substrate, a process vital for sustaining cardiac contractility and function. However, it is its role as a biomarker that truly shines when the heart faces challenges. When cardiac ischemia or infarction, such as a heart attack, occurs, the heart muscle experiences injury due to insufficient blood supply. This ischemic injury triggers the release of H-FABP into the bloodstream. Consequently, elevated levels of H-FABP in a cat's blood can serve as an early indicator of myocardial damage, even before clinical symptoms manifest.
