    Target/Biomarker information

Cobalamin, known colloquially as Vitamin B12 and represented by the biomarker CBL, is a remarkable biochemical cornerstone within the feline (cat) community. This water-soluble vitamin serves as an essential cog in numerous metabolic pathways that are fundamental to feline health and well-being. Structurally, Vitamin B12 features a complex molecular arrangement with a central cobalt atom. This cobalt atom is the linchpin of Vitamin B12's biological activity, crucial for its role as a coenzyme in enzymatic reactions vital to feline physiology. Vitamin B12 plays a pivotal role in the metabolic conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, catalyzed by methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. This conversion has far-reaching implications, as it contributes to the metabolism of amino acids and fatty acids. Additionally, Vitamin B12 participates in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, a reaction catalyzed by methionine synthase. Methionine is a foundational amino acid, and its synthesis is indispensable for protein production and overall cellular function. Beyond its involvement in amino acid and fatty acid metabolism, Vitamin B12 is integral to DNA synthesis. Cats rely on Vitamin B12 for the production of thymidine, one of the four nucleotide building blocks of DNA. This role is foundational for growth, tissue repair, and overall feline development. Vitamin B12's significance extends to the production of myelin, the insulating sheath that envelops nerve fibers. Myelin ensures efficient transmission of nerve impulses, underpinning neurological function. Furthermore, Vitamin B12 plays a key role in heme synthesis, a vital component of hemoglobin within red blood cells. Hemoglobin's function in oxygen transport makes it central to feline vitality.
