    Target/Biomarker information

Feline B-type Natriuretic Peptide, commonly referred to as Feline BNP, assumes a central role in the intricate web of feline cardiovascular health. Synthesized predominantly within the ventricles of the heart in domestic cats (Felis catus), this peptide hormone is a key player in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance. It is part of the larger natriuretic peptide family, with atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) as its companion, orchestrating the physiological symphony of cardiovascular stability. The production and release of Feline BNP are finely tuned processes, responsive to the demands placed on the feline heart. When the heart encounters increased pressure or volume overload, often due to conditions like congestive heart failure (CHF), valvular disease, or cardiomyopathy, the ventricles react by liberating Feline BNP into the bloodstream. This response serves as a natural mechanism to alleviate the cardiac workload and maintain blood pressure within the ideal range. The actions of Feline BNP are executed through its binding to specific receptors in the kidneys and blood vessels. This binding event initiates a cascade of events leading to increased excretion of sodium and water by the kidneys, promoting diuresis. This diuretic effect translates into a reduction in blood volume, a lightened burden on the heart, and the restoration of cardiovascular equilibrium.
