Target/Biomarker information
Feline Atrial Natriuretic Peptide, or Feline ANP, stands as a remarkable component of the intricate cardiovascular system within domestic cats (Felis catus). Its origin lies in the atrial myocardium, specifically the atria, which are the heart's upper chambers responsible for receiving blood returning from the body and sending it to the ventricles for pumping into circulation. Structurally, Feline ANP is a peptide hormone composed of a chain of amino acids. Its synthesis and release are governed by the heart's sensitivity to changes in atrial pressure, primarily in response to the stretching of atrial walls. This mechanism comes into play during conditions that impose additional workload on the heart, such as increased blood volume or pressure within the atria. The role of Feline ANP within the feline body is truly remarkable. Its primary function is to maintain cardiovascular homeostasis by orchestrating a series of responses that help regulate blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels. One of its most notable actions is the promotion of vasodilation, which leads to the relaxation of blood vessels. This process helps to alleviate the strain on the heart, reducing cardiac workload and ultimately contributing to enhanced cardiac function. Additionally, Feline ANP is a potent regulator of renal function. It enhances glomerular filtration rate (GFR) within the kidneys, which increases the rate at which blood is filtered to form urine. Moreover, Feline ANP inhibits sodium reabsorption in the renal tubules, facilitating increased sodium excretion in the urine. As sodium levels drop, water follows, aiding in the reduction of blood volume and blood pressure. These actions collectively contribute to the regulation of the body's fluid balance.
