Target/Biomarker information
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) stands as a pivotal biomarker in the intricate web of feline endocrinology, orchestrating the cat's response to stressors and maintaining hormonal equilibrium. Structurally, ACTH is a 39-amino acid peptide hormone synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It belongs to the melanocortin family, a diverse group of hormones with multifaceted physiological roles. The primary mission of ACTH lies in its governance of the adrenal glands, specifically the adrenal cortex. When the feline body perceives stress or detects alterations in its internal milieu, the hypothalamus responds by releasing corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH, in turn, kindles the anterior pituitary gland to unleash ACTH into the bloodstream. In its journey through circulation, ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex, where it binds to specific receptors adorning the surface of adrenal cells. This binding event ignites a cascade of intracellular processes culminating in the synthesis and release of cortisol, a corticosteroid hormone. Often referred to as the "stress hormone," cortisol exerts far-reaching effects on feline physiology. Cortisol wields the power to modulate metabolism, influence immune function, and dictate the feline response to stressors. It elevates blood glucose levels, tames immune responses, and orchestrates anti-inflammatory actions. Furthermore, cortisol influences protein and fat metabolism, maintains electrolyte balance, and bears influence on cardiovascular function.
