Target/Biomarker information
Feline Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) represents a cornerstone of feline neuroscience, standing as a molecular sentinel in the study of neurodegenerative conditions affecting our cherished feline companions. Structurally, Aβ42 comprises 42 amino acids and is an integral fragment of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). In a physiological context, APP undergoes sequential proteolytic cleavage, involving β-secretase and γ-secretase enzymes, culminating in the generation of various amyloid-beta peptides, including Aβ42. However, the relevance of Aβ42 extends beyond its role as a byproduct of APP metabolism. In the context of cognitive dysfunction in cats, a condition reminiscent of Alzheimer's disease in humans, Aβ42 takes center stage. An aberration in Aβ42 metabolism and clearance within the feline brain leads to its accumulation, ultimately resulting in the formation of amyloid plaques. These plaques, primarily composed of Aβ42, are emblematic of cognitive decline in affected cats. The pathological implications of Aβ42 aggregation are far-reaching. As amyloid plaques accumulate, they disrupt normal synaptic function, trigger neuroinflammatory responses, and promote oxidative stress. These molecular events collectively contribute to the progressive cognitive deficits observed in cats suffering from feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome (FCDS).
