    Target/Biomarker information

Equine p-tau212 and p-tau214 represent a subset of tau proteins specific to the equine neurological landscape. These phosphorylated tau variants are intricately involved in maintaining the structural stability of microtubules within neurons. Under normal circumstances, tau proteins bind to microtubules and aid in their assembly, ensuring proper neuronal function, axonal transport, and synaptic communication. However, the equilibrium in tau phosphorylation is delicate, and when disrupted, it can have far-reaching consequences. In equine neurodegenerative disorders, such as certain tauopathies, aberrant phosphorylation of tau proteins occurs. This post-translational modification leads to tau proteins adopting abnormal conformations, which renders them prone to aggregation. The aggregation of tau proteins culminates in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles, a pathological hallmark reminiscent of similar neurodegenerative diseases in humans, like Alzheimer's disease. Equine p-tau212 and p-tau214, phosphorylated at specific sites within the tau protein sequence, are indicative of this pathological cascade. They serve as early indicators of tauopathy-related neurodegenerative processes in horses. The presence of elevated levels of these biomarkers suggests ongoing tau phosphorylation and the potential emergence of cognitive and neurological deficits in affected equines.
