Nestled predominantly within the thyroid gland, TPO conducts a symphony of enzymatic reactions critical to the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The defining function of TPO revolves around its catalytic prowess, culminating in the iodination of tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin. Thyroglobulin, a substantial glycoprotein manufactured within thyroid follicular cells, serves as the raw material for thyroid hormone production. TPO's intervention initiates the formation of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), two thyroid hormones that wield profound regulatory authority over metabolic pathways, energy utilization, thermoregulation, growth, and various physiological systems in horses. TPO's catalytic mastery unfurls through a complex dance of iodination, wherein iodine atoms are judiciously incorporated onto specific tyrosine residues within thyroglobulin.
