    Target/Biomarker information

S100-A9 in horses (equines) emerges as a pivotal biomarker with multifaceted roles that transcend its status as a mere indicator. It plays a central role in equine health, inflammation, and immunity, with a diverse range of functions that underscore its significance in equine physiology. S100-A9, also known as calgranulin B, belongs to the S100 protein family, a group of calcium-binding proteins celebrated for their involvement in various cellular processes, particularly those related to inflammation and immune responses. In horses, S100-A9 takes center stage in the innate immune system, predominantly produced by neutrophils and monocytes. The hallmark of S100-A9's functionality lies in its ability to form a heterodimeric complex with S100-A8, collectively referred to as S100A8/A9 or calprotectin. This complex is released by activated neutrophils and monocytes in response to inflammatory cues, thus serving as a sentinel of the innate immune response. Upon release into the extracellular environment, S100A8/A9 exerts potent pro-inflammatory effects, orchestrating the recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection or injury. Beyond its role as an inflammatory mediator, S100-A9 is implicated in a multitude of cellular processes within the equine body. It contributes to cell adhesion, facilitating interactions between immune cells and the endothelium lining blood vessels. Moreover, it plays a role in cell differentiation and tissue repair, underscoring its multifunctional nature. Of significant note is S100-A9's function as a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecule. It acts as a sentinel, alerting the immune system to tissue damage or infection, thus enabling a rapid immune response. This feature highlights its significance in equine physiology, where it serves as a versatile player in immune regulation and tissue homeostasis.
