Target/Biomarker information
Equine Insulin, an intricate peptide hormone comprising 51 amino acids, reigns supreme as a cornerstone of glucose regulation in horses. Produced and secreted by the beta cells nestled within the equine pancreas, it orchestrates a symphony of metabolic processes that dictate how horses utilize glucose for energy and storage. At its core, Equine Insulin serves as the conductor for cellular glucose uptake. Upon its release into circulation, it seeks out insulin receptors on the surfaces of target cells, notably those found in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. This binding event sets in motion a finely tuned series of intracellular signaling pathways, culminating in the translocation of glucose transporters (GLUT4) to the cell membrane. These transporters act as the molecular gatekeepers that permit glucose entry into the cell, where it can be either converted into energy through glycolysis or stored as glycogen for future energy demands. The secretion of Equine Insulin is intricately linked to blood glucose levels. After a horse's meal, when glucose levels surge, beta cells respond by releasing insulin, effectively facilitating glucose uptake into cells and leading to a decline in blood glucose levels, restoring metabolic equilibrium. Conversely, during fasting or times of heightened energy demand, Equine Insulin secretion diminishes, allowing stored glucose to be mobilized and released into circulation to maintain vital glucose homeostasis.
