    Target/Biomarker Information

IFNγ, or Interferon-gamma, is a versatile and indispensable biomarker within the context of horses (equines). This cytokine plays a central role in the equine immune system's response to inflammatory challenges, particularly those posed by viral infections and intracellular pathogens. Produced by immune cells such as T cells, natural killer cells, and antigen-presenting cells, IFNγ serves as a linchpin in the immune defense of horses.

Structurally, IFNγ is a small protein that exerts its effects by binding to specific cell surface receptors. Upon binding, it initiates a complex signaling cascade that culminates in the activation of various immune effector functions. In the equine immune system, IFNγ's primary function is to activate macrophages, enhancing their ability to recognize, engulf, and eliminate infected cells. This immune cascade is a critical component of the host's defense against viral infections and other intracellular pathogens.
