    Target/Biomarker information

Equine C-reactive Protein (eCRP) stands as a cornerstone biomarker in the world of equine health, intricately woven into the fabric of the horse's immune response to inflammatory challenges. Structurally, eCRP is a pentameric protein, composed of five identical subunits, each boasting a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. Its synthesis primarily occurs in the hepatocytes of the liver, induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines, most notably interleukin-6 (IL-6). The hallmark of eCRP lies in its rapid response to inflammation. When a horse confronts infectious agents, injuries, or other inflammatory triggers, the liver promptly initiates the production of eCRP. This leads to a noticeable increase in its concentration within the bloodstream, making eCRP an invaluable sentinel biomarker, capable of detecting even subtle deviations from normal health in a horse. Functionally, eCRP serves as an acute-phase reactant, playing a pivotal role in the horse's innate immune system. It enhances opsonization and phagocytosis, bolstering the body's defenses against invading pathogens and damaged tissues. eCRP's contribution extends to the initiation of the complement cascade, further aiding in the removal of threats.
