    Target/Biomarker information

Cobalamin, or Vitamin B12, is an intriguing biochemical cornerstone within the equine (horse) community. This water-soluble vitamin, represented by the biomarker CBL, plays a pivotal role in a plethora of metabolic pathways that are vital for equine health and vigor. Structurally, Vitamin B12 boasts a complex molecular arrangement with a central cobalt atom. This cobalt atom is the linchpin of Vitamin B12's biological activity, crucial for its role as a coenzyme in enzymatic reactions that are foundational to equine physiology. One of Vitamin B12's critical functions is its involvement in the metabolic conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, a process catalyzed by methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. This conversion is of immense significance, as it contributes to the metabolism of amino acids and fatty acids, which are essential for the energy production and overall cellular function in horses. Furthermore, Vitamin B12 actively participates in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, a reaction catalyzed by methionine synthase. Methionine is a fundamental amino acid and serves as the precursor for protein synthesis, making it indispensable for equine growth and muscle development. Beyond these vital functions, Vitamin B12 is crucial for DNA synthesis in horses. It supports the production of thymidine, one of the four nucleotide building blocks of DNA. This role is pivotal for equine growth, tissue repair, and overall development. Vitamin B12's significance further extends to the synthesis of myelin, the insulating sheath that envelops nerve fibers. In doing so, it ensures the efficient transmission of nerve impulses, underpinning neurological function. Additionally, Vitamin B12 plays a key role in heme synthesis, a vital component of hemoglobin within red blood cells. Hemoglobin's function in oxygen transport makes it central to equine vitality and performance.
