Target/Biomarker information
Equine B2M, or Beta-2 Microglobulin, stands as a remarkable protein, an orchestrator of the complex symphony that is the equine immune system. This small, unassuming globular protein plays a pivotal role in equine health, serving as an essential component of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules. The MHC class I molecules, in partnership with Equine B2M, form the cornerstone of immune recognition and surveillance in horses. These molecules are like molecular flags displayed on the surface of nearly every nucleated cell in a horse's body. Their primary function is to present fragments of intracellular pathogens or aberrant cellular proteins to cytotoxic T cells, the immune system's elite enforcers. This presentation is akin to a molecular "Wanted" poster, allowing the immune system to identify and eliminate infected or aberrant cells with precision. Equine B2M plays a vital role in ensuring the proper functioning of MHC class I molecules. Without B2M, these molecules would not be efficiently transported to the cell surface or would be susceptible to premature degradation, compromising the horse's immune surveillance. Equine B2M steps in as the molecular caretaker, maintaining the vigilance of the immune system and ensuring that threats are promptly detected and dealt with.
