Target/Biomarker information
Soluble Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-2 (sTREM2) emerges as a fascinating component of the canine immune and central nervous systems. In its soluble form, sTREM2 represents a distinct functional entity compared to its membrane-bound counterpart, TREM2. sTREM2 is generated through proteolytic cleavage of the membrane-bound receptor and can be found in the cerebrospinal fluid and bloodstream of dogs. Structurally, sTREM2 shares homology with its membrane-bound counterpart but lacks the transmembrane domain. Instead, it retains the extracellular domain responsible for interactions with various ligands and immune cells. This unique structure allows sTREM2 to exert its functions within the canine body. Functionally, sTREM2 is a key player in the modulation of immune responses within the central nervous system of dogs. Its presence is particularly notable in microglia, specialized immune cells resident in the brain. sTREM2 acts as a signaling molecule, influencing the behavior of microglia and other immune cells, especially in the context of neuroinflammation. Importantly, sTREM2's role goes beyond immune modulation. Research suggests that sTREM2 is involved in the phagocytic clearance of cellular debris and potentially contributes to the resolution of inflammation in the canine brain. This multifaceted functionality underscores the importance of sTREM2 in maintaining the balance between immune responses and neurological health in dogs.
