    Target/Biomarker information

Canine Fetal Fibronectin (c-fFN) is a remarkable biomarker intricately woven into the tapestry of canine reproductive biology. This glycoprotein, uniquely found within the amniotic fluid and placental tissues of pregnant dogs, holds the pivotal responsibility of securing the bonds that sustain pregnancy. Structurally, c-fFN is part of the fibronectin family, a group of adhesive proteins that play crucial roles in cell adhesion and tissue organization. The primary mission of c-fFN is to serve as a molecular adhesive. During pregnancy, it acts as the glue that binds the developing canine embryos to the uterine wall. This adhesion is not merely a structural function; it is the foundation upon which the entire pregnancy relies. Without the stable connection c-fFN provides, the developing pups would be at risk of detachment from the uterine lining, leading to a host of potential complications. Beyond its adhesive properties, c-fFN plays a strategic role in immune regulation. Pregnancy represents a unique challenge for the maternal immune system, as it must tolerate the presence of semi-allogeneic embryos—offspring that share some, but not all, genetic material with the mother. c-fFN contributes to immune tolerance, ensuring that the mother's immune system does not mount a hostile response against the developing embryos. This immunomodulatory function is crucial for the success of canine pregnancies.
