Target/Biomarker information
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in dogs (canines) is a glycoprotein enzyme with a specific role in male reproductive physiology. PSA is primarily produced by the prostate gland and is essential for the liquefaction of semen following ejaculation. This enzymatic action aids in sperm mobility and fertilization. Structurally, PSA is classified as a serine protease, and its expression is regulated by androgens, the male sex hormones. In healthy male dogs, PSA is predominantly found within the prostate tissue, where it is synthesized by the prostate epithelial cells. It is subsequently secreted into the seminal fluid, where it exerts its enzymatic activity. PSA is recognized for its specificity to the prostate, making it a valuable biomarker for assessing prostate health. PSA levels can be measured in the bloodstream, but it's important to note that in healthy dogs, these levels are typically low. Various factors can influence PSA levels, including age and breed. Age-related changes in the prostate can lead to modest increases in PSA levels, which are considered normal in older dogs.
