Target/Biomarker information
Dog/Canine Prostaglandin I (PG I), or prostacyclin, emerges as a fundamental player in the intricate orchestra of canine cardiovascular physiology. This lipid compound, belonging to the prostaglandin family, boasts hormone-like functions and carries out its pivotal duties primarily within the endothelial cells that line the inner walls of blood vessels. Structurally, PG I showcases a 20-carbon chain with a cyclopentane ring structure, featuring a hydroxyl group. It is synthesized through the enzymatic action of prostacyclin synthase, an enzyme found predominantly within endothelial cells. This synthesis is a tightly regulated process, ensuring that PG I is available when needed to exert its critical functions. PG I's primary mission in canine physiology is to maintain vascular homeostasis. It achieves this by acting as a potent vasodilator, particularly in arterioles and capillaries. When released, PG I serves as a chemical messenger that signals the adjacent smooth muscle cells in the blood vessel walls to relax. This relaxation results in vasodilation, a widening of the blood vessel lumen. The consequence is a reduction in vascular resistance and an increase in blood vessel diameter, both of which facilitate optimal blood flow throughout the canine circulatory system. By promoting proper blood pressure and ensuring adequate perfusion of tissues, PG I plays a pivotal role in safeguarding cardiovascular health in dogs.
