    Target/Biomarker information

N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in dogs is a fragment of the B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) precursor molecule, primarily synthesized and released from cardiac myocytes in response to myocardial stretch and stress. This biomarker has emerged as a cornerstone in veterinary cardiology, providing critical insights into canine cardiac health. The production of NT-proBNP is intimately linked to cardiac function in dogs. Specifically, the ventricles of the heart, notably the left ventricle, serve as the primary source of NT-proBNP secretion. When these cardiac muscles encounter stress, strain, or injury, such as in cases of valvular heart disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, or congestive heart failure (CHF), NT-proBNP is released into the bloodstream. NT-proBNP serves as a sensitive and specific indicator of cardiac stress and dysfunction in dogs. Its measurement allows veterinarians to assess the presence and severity of various cardiac diseases, facilitating early diagnosis and tailored treatment strategies.
