Canine Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), an enzymatic biomarker, is a species-specific variant of the ubiquitous glycolytic enzyme enolase, primarily localized within neuronal and neuroendocrine cells in the canine central and peripheral nervous systems. Enolases are crucial enzymes in the glycolysis pathway, responsible for catalyzing the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate. NSE, however, possesses a unique and highly specialized role beyond glycolysis. Its distinct presence in neural tissues makes it a potent marker for neuronal health assessment. The enzyme is primarily concentrated in mature neurons, where it plays a crucial role in maintaining energy metabolism and neuronal integrity.
