    Target/Biomarker information

Canine Fibrinogen, an intricate player in the dog's hemostatic orchestra, merits a closer examination. Structurally, it is a glycoprotein of considerable complexity, comprising three polypeptide chains: alpha, beta, and gamma. These chains intertwine to form a large, hexameric molecule with a molecular mass of approximately 340 kDa. Synthesized predominantly in the liver, canine fibrinogen is released into the bloodstream, where it awaits its crucial role in maintaining hemostasis. The cornerstone of canine fibrinogen's function lies in its conversion to fibrin, the scaffolding upon which blood clots are constructed. This conversion is orchestrated by the enzyme thrombin, which cleaves fibrinogen's alpha and beta chains, unleashing fibrin's polymerization potential. Fibrin threads emerge from this process, interweaving into a meshwork that entraps blood cells, forming the foundation of a blood clot. Canine fibrinogen's dynamic nature renders it a versatile biomarker. Its concentrations can fluctuate in response to various physiological and pathological stimuli. In instances of inflammation, infection, or tissue injury, fibrinogen synthesis in the liver escalates as part of the acute-phase response. This elevation serves a protective purpose, fortifying the body's ability to staunch bleeding at the site of injury.
