Target/Biomarker information
Canine C-reactive Protein (cCRP) is a pivotal biomarker, central to the physiological response of dogs to inflammatory challenges. Structurally, it is a pentameric protein, composed of five identical subunits, each boasting a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. Its synthesis primarily occurs in the hepatocytes of the liver, induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6). The central role of cCRP lies in its rapid response to inflammation, injury, or infection. Upon the detection of such triggers, the liver immediately initiates the production of cCRP, leading to a noticeable increase in its concentration within the bloodstream. This swift reaction makes cCRP an invaluable sentinel, capable of detecting even subtle changes in a dog's health. Beyond its structural and biosynthetic intricacies, cCRP actively participates in the canine immune response. It serves as an acute-phase protein, facilitating the orchestration of the immune system's innate arm. cCRP augments the complement cascade, promoting opsonization and phagocytosis, thus bolstering the body's defenses against invading pathogens.
