Target/Biomarker information
Cobalamin, or Vitamin B12, is a veritable biochemical marvel within the canine (dog) population. This water-soluble vitamin, represented by the biomarker CBL, serves as a linchpin in countless metabolic pathways critical to canine health and vitality. At its heart, Vitamin B12 boasts a complex molecular structure, characterized by a central cobalt atom. This cobalt atom is the epicenter of Vitamin B12's biological activity, essential for its role as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions vital to a dog's well-being. One of Vitamin B12's pivotal roles is in the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, a process catalyzed by the enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. This reaction has far-reaching implications, as it contributes to the metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids. Additionally, Vitamin B12 participates in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, a reaction catalyzed by methionine synthase. Methionine is a fundamental amino acid, and its synthesis is indispensable for protein production and overall cellular function. Beyond its involvement in amino acid and fatty acid metabolism, Vitamin B12 holds a critical place in DNA synthesis. Dogs rely on Vitamin B12 for the production of thymidine, one of the four nucleotide building blocks of DNA. This role is foundational for growth, tissue repair, and overall canine development. Vitamin B12's significance extends to the production of myelin, the insulating sheath that envelops nerve fibers. Myelin ensures efficient transmission of nerve impulses, underpinning neurological function. Furthermore, Vitamin B12 plays a key role in heme synthesis, a vital component of hemoglobin within red blood cells. Hemoglobin's function in oxygen transport makes it central to canine vitality.
