Target/Biomarker information
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) is a pivotal player in the endocrine system of dogs, orchestrating the body's response to stressors and maintaining hormonal balance. Structurally, ACTH is a 39-amino acid peptide hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It belongs to the family of melanocortins, a group of hormones with diverse physiological functions. The primary role of ACTH lies in its regulation of the adrenal glands, specifically the adrenal cortex. In response to stress or changes in the internal environment, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH, in turn, triggers the secretion of ACTH from the anterior pituitary gland. ACTH then enters the bloodstream and travels to the adrenal cortex. In the adrenal cortex, ACTH binds to specific receptors on the surface of adrenal cells, setting in motion a series of intracellular events. These events lead to the synthesis and release of cortisol, a corticosteroid hormone with far-reaching effects on the body. Cortisol, often referred to as the "stress hormone," plays a pivotal role in metabolic regulation, immune function, and the body's response to various stressors. It helps the body adapt to stressful situations by increasing blood glucose levels, suppressing the immune system, and modulating inflammation. Cortisol also influences other physiological processes, including protein and fat metabolism, electrolyte balance, and cardiovascular function.
