α-defensin 5, often referred to as Def5, is a remarkable antimicrobial peptide residing within the bovine (cattle) digestive system. It belongs to the α-defensin family, a group of small cationic peptides celebrated for their potent antimicrobial properties. Within the complex physiology of cattle, α-defensin 5 assumes a pivotal role in the innate immune system, primarily within the gastrointestinal tract. The production and secretion of α-defensin 5 primarily occur within specialized cells called Paneth cells. These cells are strategically located in the crypts of Lieberkühn in the small intestine, where they play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal health and defending against potential microbial threats. Structurally, α-defensin 5 showcases a unique arrangement of cysteine residues that form disulfide bonds. These bonds not only confer structural stability but also enhance its antimicrobial activity. The primary function of α-defensin 5 is to target and neutralize a broad spectrum of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. By disrupting the integrity of microbial cell membranes, α-defensin 5 assumes a pivotal role in the body's defense against invasive microorganisms.
