Structurally, SAHH is an enzyme with a pivotal role – the hydrolysis of S-Adenosylhomocysteine (SAH). SAH is a metabolic byproduct arising from methylation reactions, a process involved in the transfer of methyl groups to DNA, RNA, proteins, and other molecules. When SAH accumulates, it inhibits the activity of methyltransferase enzymes, which are responsible for DNA and RNA methylation, protein modifications, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters. SAHH acts as the enzyme that quells the potential chaos caused by excessive SAH. It cleaves SAH into adenosine and homocysteine, effectively preventing the buildup of SAH to inhibitory levels.
