As a member of the S100 protein family, this calcium-binding protein boasts a diverse array of functions, particularly in the realms of inflammation and immune responses. S100-A9, also known as calgranulin B, is predominantly produced by neutrophils and monocytes in bovines, marking its significance as a key component of the innate immune system. Its pivotal feature lies in its capacity to form a heterodimeric complex with S100-A8, collectively referred to as S100A8/A9 or calprotectin. This complex serves as a sentinel of the innate immune system, releasing potent pro-inflammatory signals upon activation, such as the recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection or injury.
