    Target/Biomarker information

Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) in cattle, often referred to as bovines, stands as a remarkable biomarker central to the intricate dance of calcium and phosphorus regulation within these ruminant animals. Structurally, PTH consists of 84 amino acids and is synthesized predominantly in the parathyroid glands, four small, pea-sized structures nestled adjacent to the thyroid gland. The fundamental role of PTH is the maintenance of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis. In response to fluctuations in serum calcium levels, PTH secretion is tightly regulated. When calcium levels plummet, PTH is swiftly released into the bloodstream, setting in motion a cascade of physiological responses designed to restore calcium balance. One of PTH's primary actions in cattle is its stimulation of osteoclast activity. Osteoclasts are specialized bone cells responsible for resorbing bone tissue. When PTH binds to its receptors on osteoclasts, it signals these cells to break down bone matrix, releasing calcium and phosphorus into the bloodstream. This process, known as bone resorption, provides a rapid source of these minerals to meet immediate physiological demands. Beyond bone resorption, PTH exerts its influence on renal function. It enhances the reabsorption of calcium in the renal tubules, reducing calcium loss through urine. This conserves calcium within the body. Moreover, PTH indirectly promotes calcium and phosphorus absorption from the gastrointestinal tract by stimulating the synthesis of calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D. Calcitriol, in turn, enhances the efficiency of calcium and phosphorus absorption in the intestines, ensuring a comprehensive approach to mineral balance. PTH's significance in cattle physiology extends beyond mineral homeostasis. Adequate calcium levels are indispensable for muscle function and nerve transmission. A deficiency in calcium can lead to neuromuscular issues, affecting the ability of cattle to stand, walk, or even perform routine bodily functions. Therefore, PTH plays a pivotal role in maintaining not only skeletal health but also the overall physiological stability of bovines.
