Structurally, NFL belongs to the neurofilament protein family and predominantly resides within the axons of bovine neurons. When bovine neurons sustain damage, be it from traumatic events, neurodegenerative conditions, or inflammatory processes, NFL is released from the affected axons. These liberated NFL molecules eventually find their way into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and bloodstream, endowing NFL with the status of a measurable biomarker for neuronal damage.
